“Retired Education Personnel Recognition Month

Cummings, NC Retired School Personnel and Pam Deardorff, Executive Director (Right) a proclamation on behalf of Governor Beverly E. Perdue proclaiming August 2010 as “Retired Education Personnel Recognition Month” in North Carolina and commending its observance to our citizens. This event took place at the Holiday Inn, Raleigh on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, during the first “Committee Day” observance in the legacy of the NCRSP.

During the March 2010 State Convention in Winston Salem, NC, then President-Elect Cummings promised 335 NCRSP delegates the Governor’s proclamation. She delivered. Cummings said, “I wanted Gov. Perdue to be reminded that though we are retired, we continue to be a viable force in supporting public education and active with children and educators. Retirees are also extremely active participants in our communities.
The proclamation denotes that of the 157,000 retired teachers and state government employees in North Carolina, 91,000 individual retired from a public school system; 7,000 retired from a community college and 18,000 from the university system.
The NCRSP members volunteered their time and talents as tutors, mentors, and community volunteers contributing a total of 604,000 hours of community service in 2009, with an estimated value of $12 million in service for schools, communities, and the state. Cummings further said, “It is important that the Governor and her team know that we are partners in education, and we are a strong voting block in North Carolina.
